When to visit the Philippines: dry season, amihan, habagat and typhoons
The most reliable travel months are December to May, the dry season, when the north-east amihan winds bring cooler, calmer weather to most west-facing beaches. June to November is the wet season under the south-west habagat, with the highest typhoon risk from about July to October. Surfers and some east-coast islands run on the opposite calendar.

The two monsoons
The amihan (north-east monsoon) usually sets in around November and lasts until about March, bringing dry, cooler air and calm seas to the western side of the archipelago: Boracay's White Beach, Palawan's west coast, Cebu's Moalboal and most of Luzon's west coast. The habagat (south-west monsoon) runs roughly June to October, with rain and rough seas on those same west-facing shores while east-facing coasts are calmer.
March to May is the hot dry season: the best visibility for diving, but also the busiest and most expensive, especially over Holy Week.
Typhoon season
The Philippines sits in the Pacific typhoon belt. Storms can form in any month, but the peak is July to October. PAGASA, the national weather agency, publishes bulletins and raises tropical cyclone wind signals per province; ferries and small boats stop sailing when the Coast Guard suspends trips, so island plans in these months need a day of slack.
Which coast when
| Destination | Best window | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Boracay, El Nido, Coron, Moalboal, Puerto Galera | November to May | West-facing; calm under the amihan |
| Siargao (Cloud 9), Baler | September to November for surf; March to May for calm water | Pacific swell arrives with the habagat and early amihan |
| La Union (San Juan) | October to March | Amihan swell on a west-facing break |
| Batanes | March to June | Shortest gap between the monsoon rains and typhoon season |
| Baguio, Sagada, Tagaytay | December to February | Coolest highland air; Panagbenga in February |
Peak dates to plan around
- Holy Week (March or April): the whole country travels; book months ahead.
